New Year's Resolutions are a way to keep ourselves accountable in our never-ending journey of self-discovery and improvement. With 2022, we, as a whole, want to have hope and optimism, but for obvious reasons, it’s hard to stay inspired these days. I’m not going to repeat or re-hash societal, economic, and environmental issues happening; there’s enough of that everywhere on the internet. But with 2022, we are given an opportunity to have a fresh start, a different attitude, and cautious optimism.
Create a Life You Can’t Wait to Wake Up To
Stop listening to what society, your teacher, your friends, or even what the media tells you what you should be doing with your life. This year, really consider what you want, what makes you happy, and then start working towards those things becoming your reality. Pick an area of your life you want to improve, and focus on it.
Sometimes, we all need a little routine in our lives, and planning and structure can be good, but it doesn’t have to be all the time. If there’s anything we learned from the past two years is that there’s always a possibility for your plans to be completely disrupted. Rely less on your calendar and learn just to do things when you want and when you can.
Take Risks and Chances
Let 2022 be the year you finally did that one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but that little, nagging, negative voice in your head told you it wouldn’t work, that you don’t have the skills, the brains, the time, or whatever it may be. This year, tell that negative, annoying voice to shut up and just do it.
Let go of the fear of missing out and prioritize the things you want to do and the people you love. While you may have been told that you sometimes have to do things you don't want to do, it’s false — you really don’t. Stop doing things that drain you, that you feel like you just need to get it over with. Of course, there are a few exceptions here, like familial obligations, but you know what we mean. If you don’t feel like going out, don’t. If you don’t feel like going to that weird work event, don’t.
Next time you catch yourself using the word “sorry”, consider what you’re actually saying sorry for. Is it necessary? If you actually did something wrong, sure, but more often than not, we tend to apologise when there’s absolutely no reason for it.
Learn New Skills
Challenge yourself this year, and really work towards achieving your goals. Whether it’s learning how to knit, learning a new language, or enrolling in a course to further your career, don’t hesitate in starting a new skill. Don’t put physical and emotional comfort over widening your horizon; focus on what you want and really expand your knowledge.
Get Rid of Toxic Things + People
Start reflecting on how different things or people affect you, and if you realize they’re actually bringing in more negativity than positivity, get them out of your life. While that may sound harsh, it’s time to put yourself first and focus on your needs — and we all need a break from negative energy. It doesn’t even have to be people, it can be anything in our lives. Is Facebook bringing you down, or is it making your day better? Is watching the news cycle everyday making you a cynic? Let it go! Cut it out! Surround yourself with positivity.
Take Care of Your Appearance
Stay fresh, make an effort to keep your skin clean, your hair healthy, and your body strong. Although this is easier said than done, something as simple as having a hot shower and doing your skincare routine in the morning sets the tone for the day. Exercising and keeping your body strong is always a good hobby to have, and you can do it in whichever way suits your body. Want to learn how to dance? Do it! Rather do heavy weight lifting? If you love it, do it. For 2022, take care of your appearance and figure out what works for you.
Be better informed about the decisions you make this year when you’re shopping. Quit impulse shopping and become a more conscious consumer. If you want a staple pair of denim jeans that will go with you everywhere a lá Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, I suggest going for the iconic and well-loved Levi jeans, or the trendy, cult-favourite Madewell denim. These ethical decisions can expand past jeans and impact your beauty products. The number of vegan and clean makeup brands is increasing everyday, with favourites Glossier and Saie, making sustainable, clean, and cruelty-free products accessible and mainstream.
Consume More Quality Content
We’re all guilty of endlessly scrolling down a feed of random seven second videos; while it may seem like we’re only scrolling for a few minutes, it’s been two hours and it’s dark outside. This year, let’s start fresh and stop scrolling — or at least less. Start thoughtfully curating the content you consume and convert your weekly screen time into your weekly learning time. Read more, listen to podcasts, revise who you follow on social media, or even watch thought-provoking films. Change up the content you consume into something that’ll actually make you think rather than zone out on your couch.
The way 2022 goes is ultimately up to you. Yes, there will be curveballs thrown your way, the news will probably remain negative, and oftentimes hard to read, but at the end of the year, the decisions you made — or didn’t make — are on you. We, as a whole, are all works in progress, and it’s up to you to recognize that and do 2022 like an artil girl.
